MOUNTAINEERS JR. B LACROSSE HISTORY Updated 4/4/2010

The story of the Mimico Jr. B Lacrosse Club begins after the 1992 Midget Provincials in  Scarborough, ON.   Sean O'Callaghan and Rob Michalsky had just finished coaching a group of young men who faired well as a team over the past few seasons of Midget lacrosse(loss in Finals, in overtime of the "C" provincial in St. Catherines a year earlier) and a Semi-Final loss, in the B category.

The feeing was after the season had ended was....what's next?   Well, for those who had the skill and the desire to pursue lacrosse at the junior level, before 1993, it involved playing outside of Mimico in one of the Junior A or B centres outside of the Etobicoke area.  The Junior A Etobicoke Eclipse had folded in 1989. This was the usual stomping grounds for Mimico players who wanted to play at the Junior level .  The last Junior team in Mimico, the Jr. A Mountaineers ceased operations a decade earlier, following a suspension from the Ontario Lacrosse Association for a no-show for a mid-week game versus the Windsor Warlocks.

The feeling that was shared by the Midget coaches in 1992 was that their players had the talent to continue their lacrosse playing careers, but at a level higher that the Intermediate division, which was the only alternative offered at the time to play at home in Mimico. As well, why shouldn't Mimico return to Junior lacrosse? Why should our players have to go elsewhere to play lacrosse, when the option was there for Junior aged players in the past.  A past that was rich in history, and a history which this new franchise would draw upon.

Sean and Rob shared their vision of a Junior B team for local players with other former players, as well as, some local businessmen, who were know to be supportive of their community.

With the support of Ruby Lang and Barb Cormier, the long-time executive members of the Mimico Lacrosse Club, we petitioned the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse Council for a new franchise application.

The new franchise application was presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Ontario Lacrosse Association in November of 1992.  Our application received the overwhelming support from the membership and along with the Nepean Knights became the newest members of the Ontario JR. B Lacrosse Council.

The Mimico Junior B Mountaineers enter their 18th year of lacrosse, as hosts of the 2010 Founders Cup:  The Canadian Junior B Lacrosse Championships. We last hosted this prestigious event in 1997, and by all accounts, was our most positive experience in lacrosse.  We hope we can provide a memorable experience for all participants, and our team will do us proud in competion.
